Creative Solutions Using ‘What If?’

To foster creativity, one effective method involves exploring new directions using a list of descriptive words, primarily adjectives, to envision “what if?” scenarios. The process initiates with the question, “What if it was…” where “it” signifies the issue at hand. Here’s how this technique works in practice:

Example one: Suppose you’re dealing with an unpleasant co-worker. You might ask, “What if it was…” and insert a word from the list, like “smaller.” This prompts you to consider how to reduce the problem’s impact—perhaps spending less time with the co-worker or requesting a reassignment.

Alternatively, asking, “What if it was… fun?” might lead you to ponder whether adopting an amusing demeanor could deter the co-worker. Or, using “closer” could inspire efforts to build a better relationship with them. You explore each word on the list for fresh ideas, which you can later evaluate more systematically.

Example two: Imagine your house is too crowded because you’re running your business from it. You ask, “What if it was…” and select a word from the list, like “smaller.” While your house’s size may not change, the question might spark the idea of downsizing your business space within the house.

Although some words on the list may initially seem irrelevant, don’t immediately discard them. Even a word like “hopeless” can provoke valuable insights, prompting you to consider whether it’s time to move your business to a rented office for greater profitability.

Feel free to create your own word list, including adjectives and descriptive phrases. During this process, don’t inhibit creativity with early judgment. Instead, allow ideas to flow, take notes, and later assess your page filled with creative solutions.
